Germany starts the game in better position than any other country. They have the best technology, the best leaders, and the best combat efficiency. However they need a lot more before they can conquer Europe.

      1. Some players favor an early attack of France in 1938. I do not subscribe to this choice. Germany does not have enough good tanks for a major offensive that early. The French and British tanks are better than the tanks that Germany has in 1938. The Germans do have a huge advantage in combat efficiency over the French but not so much over GB.
      2. Germany needs to improve the economy as rapidly as possible but improved technology is also important. Difficult choices have to be made. Improved tanks and planes are the highest priority for Germany so Germany cannot afford to improve the economy every turn. Also needed as soon as possible is a supply center and militarism which gives the Germans a combat efficiency of 1.3 which no other country can match. Lots to do with a limited supply of PP.
      3. Diplomacy is extremely important in the early years of the game. Diplomacy is a game in itself. The first country to influence is Austria. This is the only other country that is German. Vienna will have the same level of production as the other German cities. This will give a good boost to the German PP production and it usually takes only a few turns to get Austria to ally with Germany. Other countries to influence are Hungary, Romania, and Turkey. Getting these countries to ally provide Germany with additional armies that help cover a large front. This is important. Better to ally than conquer. Meanwhile the allies are doing what they can to influence their favorite countries and undermine German efforts. You can play cards to reduce the influence of an allied country over a minor and destabilize countries so that they are more likely to have a coup. Make sure you study the diplomacy report each turn to see what is going on so that you determine where you need to exert your diplomacy.
      4. What to do about Czechoslovakia? Czechoslovakia is not a good target for diplomacy because that really are not friendly with Germany. They are in a position where they can be threatened. Germany gets one “Threaten” card for the entire game. Czechoslovakia is the country that is most likely to capitulate because it has lots of German troops on its borders. The problem is that there is no certainty that a country will surrender when the “Threaten” card is played. If they do not surrender war is declared on Germany by Czechoslovakia and the country that has the most influence with them. Germany need to be prepared to invade the Benelux countries before using the “Threaten” card.
      5. Officers-Officers are more important to the Germans than any other country because Germany is at war for most of the game and will probably fight more battles than any other country. Each battle gives experience to officers who are in command radius of their units. This means that the German officers will get lots of experience and many will reach level 3 or higher. In addition the German officers are much better on average than those of any other countries. They start the game at level I(with 0 XP)at 20-33% combat bonus to units within their command radius and by the time they reach level III(at 700 XP) they are getting 35-60% bonus. As they reach new levels they get additional cards and gain more staff so that they can control more units.
      6. Tips for using officers-1)Assign the number of staff to the officer’s HQ to equal his rated number. The rated number can be found to the left of the officer’s picture(most officer start at 30). 2)Create armies or Corps as large as the officer can command efficiently. To do this keep adding forces to the officers HQ command until his staff level is at or near 100%. This number is found by clicking on the HQ. It is under the HQ name. 3)Keep your sub units within 5 MP of the HQ to get full benefit from the officer. To see if a unit is in command click on it. Under the unit name is HQP. If HQP is at 100, you get full benefit of the officer bonus. As you get further away this number will drop about 20 for each hex further away down to zero. The second number under the unit name is STF. This is the staff level of the HQ. Only if both numbers are 100, will the unit receive all officer bonus. Keep monitoring these levels every turn for best results.

I am playing Germany in a three player game. I invaded France in 1939 and it is starting in January 1940 and I just took Lille. France can be a formidable opponent to conquer. One thing I have done is invest in Winter Training. I have level II researched and am making progress in France when my opponent least expects it. Winter training will serve good in Russia later on.

I agree. It is important for Germany to have Winter Training II. You really need is against the Russians.
As for your attack in France, once you cross the Muese river you should be all right. That river can be a serious obstacle if it is well defended. You need to maintain air superiority as you advance by repairing cities and building air fields

I am right next to Paris. One thing I did not do is to build many engineers to repair cities and build airfields. If I can get France conquered I am not making the same mistake in Russia. For some reason, I think some players underestimate the power that engineers have. They are so crucial.

In my Game ae Germany that is just going into 1944, I have 17 engineers units. Each one has 50 engineers.
Artillery is also important. In the game referenced above, I have 60 artillery units. Each one contains 8 Artillery II.

Just remember that the numbers Marius is quoting are from 1944. Obviously you’ve had much more time to produce by then. As for Russia, be patient, it is a very large country. Thus it won’t be a pushover.

Correction the game I referred to above is entering 1943 not 1944(typo).

As for my advance into Russia, I just took Leningrad, I am within 3 hexes of Moscow, and 2 hexes of Stalingrad. I have forces in two hexes adjacent to Tula and I have taken all the oil hexes in the Caucasus. Russian resistance is getting tougher each turn.

Concerning your conquest of France, I would not worry. If you have captured Lille no you can flank the Maginot line and advance on Paris. Do you have air superiority?

GB cannot reach very far into France with his fighters. You have to out produce GB in fighter planes and build bases close to the coast but out of reach of British fighters. Load up these bases with fighters and you will be able to get air superiority over the French cities on the channel.
The French cannot produce many Char B’s each turn and will start having supply problems when Lille is taken.
Does GB have forces in France?

Always research the latest available fighters as soon as you can. Air superiority is very important. You need quality and quantity both in fighters.

There is only one hex in GB that is in intercept range of LeHarve for early fighters. Does GB have an airfield on that hex? If not you will probably not face more than 70 fighters in LeHarve.

Keep building airfields as you advance on the ground and bring you fighters forward.

France is crumbling right now and Paris is surrounded. The Allied player has placed 400 SMG and 29 Char-B’s in Paris. I am hammering it with artillery and strategic bombing to reduce the supply level down to zero.

Also asked a question on attacks. Is their a rule of thumb or something that I can look at a have a good estimate on the number of units to win a battle or some numbers I can look at?

Marius pretty much nails it… I’ll add an extra emphasis on air power and researching new tech ASAP– if not sooner. My tactics is to attack someone by May. My Threaten Card worked so much I thought it couldn’t fail… until it did, very early. Still, if you prepare just in case, France just isn’t up to the test. I firmly believe in 88’s… and don’t worry about tank research till 39 or so. I use Armoured Car II and PZ IIs for my tank force with half-tracks. So far so good… if you have those 88s. God bless you Claus for adding them.

I think your primary objective is to capture Paris. To capture a heavily defended position you need to reduce the readiness and entrenchment level of the defenders. Artillery and air strikes do this effectively. Bombing attacks are used to damage the city infrastructure but do not do much to the defenders. Try to reduce readiness to below 20 and entrenchment below 10. Also whenever possible attack from at least 3 hexes.

I took Paris by strategic bombing the city until it was down to zero so the units in there could not be supplied. I bombarded it with about 10 artillery units. Fell within one swoop. Now my fear is North Africa. The British are at the gates of Tunis and I have a couple of German units in there. The big problem is that Italy did not produce a large enough Navy to tackle the French and British Navy in the Med. Thus I am loosing control of the Med.

As far as I know, nobody has ever attempted to take Britain. However that does not mean it is not a viable strategy. Especially if the Royal Navy is gone.

If you conquer most of the VPs on the Isle, then they will be broken, and you might win the game! However there is a big chance that before that happens the USSR would try to attack you, to prevent you from winning the game, at least if I was playing them.
